Aiming the golf industry towards a beyond sustainable future.

Greener Golf

The future of golf: Greener

Greener Golf is rooted in the foundational principles of golf and golf course design while actively reimagining the ecological and social impacts of the game.

Greener Golf aims to inspire the golf industry to drive positive change by implementing strategies that foster social connection, cultivate partnership with nature, create accessible green space for public enjoyment, and demonstrate what golf can look like when it goes beyond sustainability.

  • Greener Golf can help create and redesign golf courses that seamlessly blend with the environment. Sustainability is a part of every step, with careful attention to how each element of the course supports the landscape and community it serves, all while creating and enhancing the golf experience.

  • The Greener Golf Index (GGI) is a tool designed to better understand how a course functions and its impacts. The GGI examines water use, turf health, biodiversity, and other various important factors. With the help of technology, the GGI can also provide clear benchmarking assessments and recommendations, and be used for ongoing monitoring to enhance a golf facility’s sustainability, improve its efficiency, and optimize the overall golf experience.

  • Greener Golf provides a framework for creating impactful programs that foster community engagement and environmental stewardship, from educational initiatives to eco-friendly marketing. Custom sustainability efforts help enhance a golf course’s role as a community hub while also promoting environmental advocacy and elevating its reputation as an asset to the community.

  • The Bee Collective is a collaborative beekeeping initiative that brings golf courses together in support of pollinators. By joining, courses become part of a network working to create healthier habitats, share knowledge, and strengthen ecological connections across landscapes. The “collective” also helps set up a beekeeping program that protects the pollinators and golfers at a course.

  • A Journey Map helps golf courses reflect on where they have been, where they are, and where they can go. By exploring a course’s history, current conditions, and future goals, a Journey Map helps shape a clear, connected vision for its evolution, primarily focusing on the quality of the golf course and the golfers’ experience. A Journey Map is more rigorous and informative than a master plan, focusing on sustainability, innovation, and community. This process supports long-term stewardship and meaningful engagement on and off the course.

Our chief objective is to imitate and partner with the beauties of nature so closely as to make our work indistinguishable from nature itself.

— Adapted from a quote by Dr. Alister MacKenzie (Golf Architecture 1920)

At Greener Golf, sustainability is central to our approach. We work with golf facilities to restore ecosystems, support local communities, and create spaces that cater to both golfers and non-golfers. We apply permaculture ethics, emphasizing care for the earth, people, and a fair share, to help golf courses be ecologically responsible and socially inclusive.

Greener Golf incorporates practices such as organic turf management, water conservation, and thoughtful design that prioritize ecological integrity by supporting biodiversity, while helping golf courses prioritize their course conditions and enjoyment of playing. We also aim to help facilities become community hubs by supporting local initiatives and hosting events. Through our efforts, Greener Golf embraces innovation, utilizing cutting-edge technologies to reduce the environmental impact of golf courses.

Common Ground Statement:

Greener Golf not only believes strongly in the importance of biodiversity, but also in the value and importance of human diversity and finding common ground, what unites us.

The golf industry, as well as the planet, faces challenges of incredible scale and impact. The future of human society relies on its ability to act in ways that support the diverse global community. Historically, the golf industry operated in ways that encouraged exclusivity and unequal access. The future of the golf industry depends on a diverse, equitable, and inclusive path forward. Research shows that more diverse and inclusive operations and teams result in greater progress, more innovation, and higher achievement. Greener Golf is committed to partnering with individuals and organizations that see and work towards a more just and equitable future; for golf, for people, and for the planet.
